In a move in hopes of making the classifications more “even” the PIAA last year approved scrapping their four classification system and increasing it to six classifications. Starting the 2016/17 school year the classifications will add a 5A and 6A grouping. That means the Central League now looks like this:
Conestoga |
6A |
Garnet Valley |
6A |
Harriton |
5A |
Haverford |
6A |
Lower Merion |
5A |
Marple Newtown |
5A |
Penncrest |
5A |
Radnor |
5A |
Ridley |
6A |
Springfield |
5A |
Strath Haven |
5A |
Upper Darby |
6A |
The net effect for Strath Haven is virtually zero. Haven was always a 3A team playing in a league that was dominated by 4A teams. Now Haven is a 5A team playing in a league dominated by 6A teams. However, the District One playoff series has now increased from eight teams qualifying for the playoffs up to 16 teams which is a great opportunity to increase playoff competition.
