Springfield’s second-half surge sinks Strath Haven
By Matt Smith
Friday’s game was on the mind of Nate Romano the moment he saw Springfield’s schedule for the 2024 season.
“It was targeted on the schedule ever since I first saw it there,” said Romano, the Cougars’ crushing full back and linebacker. “I wanted this more than I wanted any other game.”
For the past five years, Springfield’s story against Strath Haven has ended in the same way — all losses, some more heartbreaking than others. Each of the past two seasons, with Romano as a sophomore and junior, the Cougars were defeated by the Panthers in both the regular season and the District 1 Class 5A tournament. Last fall, a loss to Strath Haven in the district semifinals sent the Cougars home while the Panthers went on to claim their 13th district title.
Romano and his team are determined to win Springfield’s first district football championship, but that challenging journey won’t begin until next week. Friday at George L. King Field, the Cougars had a score to settle and they did just that.
