Jahi Curtis in the Strath Haven backfield is a largely pedestrian figure. Such is the role of a split end in the Panthers’ offense, consigned to 99 percent blocking and the occasional target in the passing game.

Jahi Curtis in the opponents’ backfield, however, is a fearsome sight, a disruptive force and at times an unblockable threat. And it just happens to be on the way toward the end zone, too.

Curtis was a constant menace for Penncrest Friday night in the opening round of the District 1 Class 5A tournament, punctuated by a 29-yard fumble return for touchdown in the second quarter of a 42-0 win for the fourth-seeded Panthers.

The win sends Haven (10-1) into another all-Central matchup next week, hosting No. 5 Garnet Valley. Haven beat Garnet Valley, 35-14, at George L. King Field on Sept. 20.

Curtis was ubiquitous in the Penncrest backfield. The two tackles for loss were the least of it, given how many times he backed up the linemen assigned to slow him down, setting an edge or forcing a Penncrest ballcarrier into a different lane – and often into the waiting arms of teammates.
