A couple weeks ago, Haverford senior Bobby Menear needed a reset. Coach Luke Dougherty cut his snaps, not as punishment, but to give him a breather and a fresh start.

Since then? Menear has been excellent on defense and as the team’s kicker. Friday night against Strath Haven, in a clash of last year’s Central League co-champs, he was hard to miss.

Menear made the defensive play of the night in the second quarter, stuffing Derrick Bradley on a fourth-down jet sweep at the Fords’ 29. It was a gutsy call by the Panthers, but Menear blew it up. The stop set up the game’s only touchdown, a 17-yard scramble by quarterback Adam Kilpatrick, Menear adding the PAT to put Haverford up at halftime.

“That No. 30 (Bradley) is really fast. The previous play I couldn’t get out wide enough to him, so I knew if they ran that again to him, I had to get outside even more,” Menear said. “And I made a good play for no gain.”
