The Panthers and Fords tangled at King field on a stunning fall afternoon. It appeared early on that Haverford was going to run away with the game.
Scoring on their first two drives, the first on a short field created by a nice return on the opening kickoff and the second on a 86-yard touchdown run on a sweep play. However this Panther team is nothing if not tough and resilient. They marched into the Fords territory on 7 of 9 possessions and the Panthers struck on their own with a 35-yard touchdown pass after a Haverford turnover cutting the lead to 14-6 late in the second and into the half.
With the defense tightening up in the second half the Panthers created two fumbles and one interception to keep Haverford off the board and continued to move the ball themselves. Unfortunately the story of the day was missed opportunities although the Panthers did sustain a nice 3rd quarter drive to pull closer at 14-12. The two-point conversion was no good and the Fords were able to muster one more drive in the 4th to take a 20-12 lead.
The Panthers did move again down the field two more times in the 4th but with 20 seconds left on the clock a desperation pass was intercepted by the Fords to seal the game.
If you want to see some enthusiasm, come see these freshman play. Both quarterbacks can throw the ball, evidenced by five of the seven offensive touchdowns in three games are through the air. The kids are well coached by standout Haven alum Dan Mulhern and assistant Coach Simpkins.
