Two weeks into the season isn’t enough time to define a team, but the Delco squads sitting at 1-1 or 2-0 have to like where they’re at. For the winless, though, Friday night already feels like a must-win.
Take Garnet Valley. The Jags at 0-2? It’s unheard of. You’d have to go back more than 20 years to find the last time they opened with back-to-back losses.
Still, it’s not exactly shocking. They were sorting through a three-way camp battle at quarterback, all among juniors. For once, there wasn’t a senior with experience under center. And their opening slate was brutal: At perennial power Coatesville in Week 1, followed by reigning Central League co-champ Haverford. The Jags have only found the end zone twice in those games. The good news? Harriton, Conestoga and Lower Merion are up next, three teams that have combined for one win, which gives GV a golden chance to get rolling again and on the right side of .500. Counting out Eric Van Wyk’s team in September would be a big mistake.
