The Cougars and Panthers braved the elements to battle it out Thursday at Springfield High. The weather did not seem like it would be much of a factor as the rains stayed away for the start of the game.

The Panthers struck first with a 20 yard touchdown pass on their first possession. Springfield came right back on the ground marching 60 yards for their first score. Their 2-point try was good and it was 8-7 Cougars.

Then the rains came, heavy at times, and from the 2nd quarter for the rest of the game  was played in a steady downpour. Haven managed to grab the lead with a 15 yard touchdown run after a Cougar fumble on their own 20 which gave Haven the lead 13-8.

Once again the Cougars answered, this time on a 50 yard scamper putting Haven down 14-13.

With the rains pounding the field the Cougars took advantage on the Panthers next possession and scooped up a fumble on the Panther 40 and rumbled in for the score, taking a 22-13 lead after the 2 point try was good.

The Panthers however were not done and on the their next series connected on a 50 yard pass play for a touchdown but the point-after failed and the Panthers drew closer and were down only 22-19 at the half.

Unfortunately the weather was not kind to either teams after the first half, especially the Panthers as the conditions did not lend to much more offense. The Cougars were able to punch one more touchdown in late in the 3rd quarter to stretch the lead for good and the game would end 28-19.

It was a very good game given the conditions and what is a departure from the norm, this young Panther squad has 5 offensive touchdowns in the two games so far, with four being scored through the air!
