By Coach Junior Duffault –
Strath Haven faced off against Springfield High School in a hard-fought matchup, with both teams battling throughout the afternoon.
Springfield kicked the ball deep to open the game, where Josiah Phillips fielded it at the 28-yard line and returned it all the way for a touchdown. Phillips’ explosive return immediately set the tone for Haven on special teams.
After giving the ball back to Springfield, Haven’s defense went to work. The Panthers pinned Springfield deep in its own territory and continued to battle against a tough Cougar offense. Although the defense bent at times, it refused to break.
Owen Miller stole the spotlight, finding himself back against the goal line before hauling in an interception and returning it 98 yards for a touchdown. But he wasn’t finished. Miller added another pick-six, this time returning it 80 yards for another defensive score.
While Haven’s offense struggled to find its rhythm in the first half, managing just eight offensive snaps, the defense continued to keep the Panthers in the game.
In the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, Haven’s offense found its stride. The Panthers shifted into a Power-I formation, leaning on physical dive plays, power runs, and isolations to move the football. Dom DeVersa added an impressive run on a tight-end jet sweep, helping Haven continue to control the game.
As the clock continued to wind down, Zach Farabaugh broke through the Springfield defense for another touchdown, helping seal the victory.
In the end, Strath Haven put together a complete team performance, with special teams setting the tone, the defense delivering game-changing plays, and the offense stepping up when it mattered most.
Final Score: Strath Haven 30, Springfield 16.
