As the 2026 high school football season progresses, variety often becomes the spice of life. Week after week, teams scout opponents with different offensive philosophies that contain dozens of formations. In scouting defenses, coaches and players will agonize over every little wrinkle to account for new blitzes, stunts, twists and reactions. Once in a great while, however, the stars align where two opponents operate so similarly that it is like looking at a reflection. Aside from the color of the uniforms, fans may encounter this very phenomenon when the Strath Haven Panthers and Haverford Fords clash this Friday.
Head Coach Luke Dougherty and the 2-2 Fords arrive in Wallingford this week a bit wounded after a frustrating, 21-20 overtime loss to Academy Park on Saturday. The Fords led 14-6 midway through the 4th quarter, but missed opportunities to keep the lead in regulation, and saw a 2-point conversion try in overtime fall just short. Still, Haverford will provide a stiff challenge for Strath Haven, as the Fords’ Wing-T attack and extraordinary patience on offense has given teams fits over the last few seasons. Senior quarterback #13 Josh McGonigle is not asked to throw the ball very often, but is a strong, effective runner. A trio of backs behind him, including #9 Henry Yez (160 yards, 2TD last week), #25 Matt Fahy, and #26 Dylan Sweeney all have big-play capability. Senior #56 Joe McGinley anchors both lines, and is joined by junior #62 Tony Reyes. #57 Christian Manness is an active inside linebacker, while Yez and defensive back #5 Liam Kilpatrick accounted for two of the Fords’ three interceptions last week.
Strath Haven is riding a three-game winning streak after a never-a-doubt 35-0 blanking of Radnor. Yousif Ali’s 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns paced the rushing attack, with #3 Landon Barlow and #5 Kasey Hudson combining for another 133 on the ground. Hudson also snagged the only pass thrown in the game, a 32-yard score from #8 Jake Plunkett. The Panther defense was once again a big part of the story, securing their second shutout of the young season on the strength of their quick and aggressive defensive line. #84 Tyler Slaughter and #62 Jack Shuster were disruptive all night at tackle, while ends #57 Zach Milligan and Barlow (3 sacks) did an excellent job containing Radnor runners to just two yards per carry. #7 Cole Haly and #32 Connor Kelly tackled well, and Ali’s 53-yard interception return late in the 4th quarter set the stage for a speedy 9-yard touchdown burst from #17 Christian DeShields.
Looking ahead to this Friday, Head Coach Kevin Clancy will have quite a test facing a team that is mirror image of his Panther squad in many ways. Both are Wing-T offenses, and Haverford’s playcaller is none other than Kevin Clancy, Jr. Expect a ground-heavy chess match similar to last season’s contest, a 10-7 slugfest where Haverford executed just a bit better than the Panthers. Strath Haven will look to improve their rushing attack from all angles, and will need excellent blocking from Hudson, Ali, and Barlow in addition to the offensive front. The Panthers can remain optimistic that they played the Fords tough last season even with returning starters Barlow, Milligan, and #80 John Reilly missing that contest. On the flip side, Haverford can have the confidence that they practice against a Wing-T attack every day and understand concepts and tendencies. Further, the graduation of Haverford’s all-time leading rusher Liam Taylor may in some ways make the Fords more dangerous this season, as now four different runners make the offense more unpredictable and diverse. Even with the status of dynamic two-way starter Dylan Sweeney up in the air, who missed last week’s game with an injury, beating the Fords remains a tall task.
The Panthers will need all-hands-on-deck for this Friday’s battle, so plan to fill the stands at George L. King field to see if Strath Haven can stretch their win streak to four games. And with both teams having playoff aspirations come November, this battle at the midpoint could go a long way in determining that path. Go Panthers!
