Over the years, Interboro’s football program has had its share of memorable moments.
Coach George Corner had an undefeated team in 1963 on which a talented track athlete named Vince Papale played end. Papale, with no college football experience, went from the sandlots as a member of the Aston Knights to enough of a career with the Eagles that Hollywood made him “Invincible” on the big screen.
Ray Spafford had teams led by All-Delco players Tim Keyser and Greg Ambrose, who helped Widener University to an NCAA Division III championship.
Steve Lennox made his Bucs perennial playoff contenders as well as squads capable of beating rival Ridley in Thanksgiving Day games.
Dennis Lux, who played quarterback under Lennox, took the 2022 Interboro team to the PIAA District 1 Class 4A championship and a state-tournament matchup with Bonner & Prendergast. Those Bucs were led by Daily Times Player of the Year Abu Kamara, who set Delaware County records with 2,832 yards rushing and 42 touchdowns in addition to getting 10 interceptions on defense.
Kamara may have departed for Yale University, but Lux and a number of his players know what he did will make a difference as the 2023 team seeks its identity.
